The Extension Points mechanism is supported only by Eclipse OSGI. OSGI provides an almost equivalent functionality called declarative services. Eclipse IDE 3.5 M2 provides tooling support for it.

Swapping to some other plugin extension point mechanism has to bear in mind that plugins are already using the current mechanism and just swapping means that ALL presumably need releasing for anything to work. 1.0 branch uses some plugins that are also used by 1.1 branch. Consequently choosing the timing for such a change has to consider all of these facts, and people offering their time to do the actual release.

Presumed not being worked on. DN AP 2.0 would have been the perfect place to do this FWIW
