see org.datanucleus.store.rdbms.query.SQLQuery, lines 315ff:

  mconn.addListener(new ManagedConnectionResourceListener()
  {
    public void transactionFlushed(){}
    public void transactionPreClose(){} // <<-- empty method body, so the following block of instructions will always run immediately!
    {
      // Disconnect the query from this ManagedConnection (read in unread rows etc)
      qr1.disconnect();
    }
  ...
